Page 6 Telecommunications for Small and Medium Business - Data ServicesDedicated Internet Access
As your business grows and you
host a web site at your location and have high volumes of e-mail, transactions,
and Web related traffic you will need the higher capacity Internet
access provided by dedicated service. "Dedicated" service provides
a permanent, "always on", connection between your business and the
Internet. The two most popular ways of providing dedicated Internet
service are Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) and T1( PRI ) - the following
are brief descriptions of these services:
Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line Service provides the same high speed for uploads and downloads and requires a dedicated circuit of its own. It is substantially more expensive than ADSL (two to three times as expensive) and is more appropriate for most business applications. Because of the substantial expense associated with SDSL, many businesses elect to take the next step up to T1 Internet access. - T1 Dedicated Internet Access - this service provides 1.5 megabits per second speed uploading and downloading from the Internet and will require hardware to connect it to your LAN or servers. This service can meet the needs of most business applications. The cost of a T1 connection will be ~$500 if your business is in a city. It could be $700 or more if your business is in a suburban or rural area. One-time installation charges run from $500 to more than $1000 depending upon the work required. The cost of T1/PRI service can be substantially reduced by "bundling" it with your local and LD service - more on this approach later. Hosting Services and Bundles: Bundled Internet services represent an economical way to develop your business' presence on the Internet. Many of these services offer far more than a basic hosted (the service owns and maintains the computer hardware and software that provides your Web site) Web site. Many include Web site development capabilities, Domain Name Service (DNS) to provide "vanity" Web site names, e-Commerce (credit card and billing services, shopping carts, etc.), e-mail addresses, and many other capabilities. Prices for Web hosting bundles range from $5.00 per month to $200 or more dependent on disk size and data transfer requirements as well as the features required. Other Data Services: There are varieties of additional Internet and data services available for business (PRI, T1, DS1, T3, DS3). Private line and frame relay services that can be used to build private networks that connect multiple sites together. A Virtual Private Network (VPN) has many of the same capabilities but is implemented over the Internet and is less expensive. Most of these services are beyond the requirements of the typical small to medium sized business and therefore we will not spend any time detailing them.
